Another Year, Another Inspection

Back at the beginning of October we got the notice that the City was coming out to do inspections. This isn’t wholly unexpected because we’ve been here a year and a half and this is the first time we’ve gotten an inspection notice, so we knew it was coming, we just weren’t sure when.

Yesterday was the inspection day. They choose units at random so you can either get things looking spectacular or you can play the odds that you won’t get picked and do nothing. I’d like to think we did something resembling mid-ground.  Yes, we cleaned. No, the place isn’t pristine. It is what it is and I think it definitely looks like ‘yes, we give a shit about how our apartment looks, we don’t live in a sty but we certainly didn’t spend a lot of time cleaning JUST because there is an inspection.’

Anyhow, it looks nice but sortve feels odd. It’s that feeling I get when I stay at my Mom’s. It’s familiar but not quite ‘home’. Even though, yes, we live here and it’s not like we live in squalor most of the time but it’s just weird not having things on the bathroom counter, for instance.  And, realistically, it’s a reminder that we could probably do better with the routine cleaning tasks.  And yes, I still need to work my way through some of the bins out in the livingroom and I need to vanquish the Closet o’ Doom, but really, it’s nowhere near as traumatic as the old apartment (which was pretty much a constant game of controlling the closet(s) of doom and not having anywhere near enough space). Now I only need one more closet that’s the size of our bedroom closet (a walk-in). So, it’s getting marginally better.

The other thing that has happened, of course, is that it was Halloween.  Normally there are herds of children running around our complex so it’s a little odd that, on Halloween night, when you would expect the thundering herds of children to be knocking at the door and generally being obnoxious (even more than usual) the complex gets eerily quiet and there is nary a child around.  I don’t know where they all go. Do they go to the adjacent residential neighborhood? Do they go through some odd portal to Narnia? (and, if that is that case, can they STAY there?)

I don’t know if I will be posting every day (as it is NaNoWriMo and also NaBloPoMo) but I will check in as I can. I am trying to be more disciplined in my writing.
