B is for Bloggess

I hope that you are familiar with Jenny Lawson aka The Bloggess. She’s wonderful, magical, funny, sweet and writes a stellar blog.

In addition to her blog, she writes books. There are three out so far, ‘Let’s Pretend This Never Happened’, which I believe I had written a review about back before my old blog got nuked, ‘Furiously Happy’ – the review of that is here and ‘You Are Here’ which is a delightful mix of writing and fabulous coloring opportunities (I will likely write a review for it when we get to the letter ‘Y’ in the blogging challenge).

Jenny has a delightful sense of humor. She writes about mental illness with gentleness and compassion. There are days that I read her blog that I laugh until I can hardly breathe and days it makes me mist up and I love all of it. I’ve had the tremendous good fortune to meet her in person when she did a book tour for her first book. Even though she has anxiety issues, she was charming and gracious and it was lovely for the few minutes that I got to speak to her.

Anyhow, if you have a mental illness yourself or know someone who does, I highly recommend Jenny’s books. I have given both Let’s Pretend This Never Happened and Furiously Happy to my Mom and I think they both provided several ‘lightbulb moments’ and epiphanies to her that perhaps I wasn’t ‘trying to be weird’ when I was a teenager, that, in reality, things were going on that I couldn’t properly articulate that were seen as just ‘teenager bullshit’ that was actually far deeper than that.

  1. She’s a gem, isn’t she? I had the honor of having her in my inbox years ago. A friend of mine and I had a rambunctious exchange in the Bloggess’ comments to a post. Rather than be angry we were using that platform, she emailed us both. (Glad I found you through the A to Z Challenge – I bet you weren’t the only one who chose her as your B!)

  2. It can be so difficult to explain to those who never experience it what is going on in our heads. Everyone has their hard.
